Overview

Harangi Reservoir is located near Hudgur village, Somwarpet taluk in Kodagu district in the Indian state of Karnataka. The reservoir is formed by a masonry dam built across Harangi River, a tributary of Kaveri River. The Harangi river originates in the Pushpagiri hills of the Western Ghats and being the only reservoir in the region of Coorg, and it holds great tranquil and picturesque value.  The Dubare forest area covers the place with its verdant trees and grasslands.  The engineering construction stands tall at 47 meters in height and 846 meters (2775 feet) in length. The dam is located about 9 km away from the heart of Kushalnagar town. Harangi dam is an important picnic spot. Harangi Dam is the first Dam build across river Kaveri. One can access its beauty when the reservoir is fully filled with water during August to September.

Harangi Dam is about 36 km from Madikeri town Harangi Reservoir is an ideal place for a picnic, and there are some short walks along designated paths. on one side you see the water gushing out of the gates and on the other, you will see the flow of the river.  The construction of Harangi Dam started in the 1970s and was opened for operation in the year 1982. The height of the dam 53 m and the boundary of the dam stretches for 845 m. It is a large dam, the reservoir of the dam is spread across the area of 420 sq km. It is a hydroelectric and irrigation project, which was built to produce hydropower and it is also used for irrigation purposes in the nearby areas. The Harangi river originates from the Pushpagiri Hills of Western Ghats in Kodagu, Karnataka. Heavy rainfall from the south-west monsoon is the source of water in the catchment area of Harangi river which is about 9 km. The length of the Harangi river from its origin to the confluence with the Kaveri river is 50 km. The Harangi river joins Kaveri near Kudige in Somwarpet taluk.

Know Before you go

• This place is definitely a must visit especially during the rainy season You will feel awesome when all the four gates of the dam are open.
• during summer there will be no much water so it's not the ideal place to visit during summer.
• park your vehicle a little distance away and not too close to the dam to avoid rush/congestion.
• This place too is slightly away from the main settlement in Kushalnagar,  There is no food and water available near dam. so carry food in case you plan to stay longer.
