Kundale Lake
Overview
Kundala is a picturesque town on the way to Top Station in Munnar, situated about 25 km from the town of Munnar at an altitude of 1700 m above sea level in Idukki District of the southern state of Kerala. Tourists often go to the top to have a panoramic view of the catchment area of the Dam. Kundala Dam which was built in 1946 for Pallivasal Hydro Electric Project is considered Asia’s first Arch Dam and is also known as Sethuparvati Dam. The dam is surrounded by mountains draped in greenery and tea garden like any other place in Munnar. In Kundala, cherry blossoms appear twice in a year. The famous Neela Kurunji flowers which bloom once in twelve years, bloom in the hills and valleys around Kundala lake. A Golf Course is also located here which belongs to Tata Tea Ltd. Aruvikkad Waterfall is situated nearby Kundala. The District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC), Idukki conducts Tea Valley Tour. The Tea Vallery Tour covers Mattupetty dam, Echo Point, Kundala, Top Station and Rajamala (Eravikulam National Park). District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) offers Boating facilities like rowboats and pedal boats are available on rent.
Know Before you go
- there are no 'Good' restaurants available here except for small tea shops. Carry food with you here. Else all you get is omelet and Maggi.
- horse ride available 100/- head for every 10 minutes.
- Avoid journey at night as far as possible. The place is notorious for elephant menace.
- Padel Boating available at INR 300 per boat for 2 persons for half an hour.
